The End of an Era

An era has come and gone.  The era of "the green couch" has come to a close.  "You must be kidding me", is what I'm sure you're saying right now.  "She's posting something about....a couch?!!"  Yep.  :)

In 2004, we were living in Boise, ID and took a huge leap of faith and bought our first home.  We had been married for 2 years and while our furniture wasn't shabby....it was all either hand-me-down stuff or left overs from our college days.  (Dave's beloved metal frame Futon comes to mind.  {rolling my eyes} ).  It was furniture that was appropriate for our "newlywed" status and our young age.  But....in buying the new house....we decided to upgrade our furniture and start fresh.  The first thing we bought for our new house...the thing that actually decided the color we would use on the living room wall (a nice, cool sage green) was the green couch.  We found it at R.C. Willey (an Intermountain West store), got it on a screaming Memorial Day sale, and were VERY pleased with ourselves.  It was a wonderful place to read, take Sunday afternoon naps while watching NASCAR, sleep when you were coughing a lot, etc.  It moved with us when we came to VA and has continued to be a fantastic couch.
In Boise
But....it has seen better days.  Dave hasn't sat on it in years because it doesn't give his back the support he needs.  The cats have worn down the back cushions by sprawling their girth over them.  There are toddler stains that are immediately visible because of the fabric and color.  And the piping around the cushions has become worn and frayed.  While Dave pretended to protest, I have been actively campaigning for a new couch for almost a year or more.  (Dave likes to pretend to protest about anything that involves redecorating or doing something different in the house.  It is like pulling teeth to get him to consider a CHANGE...and then he's usually the one who is the happiest with the change once it has happened...I won't go into the blue curtain debacle but suffice to say, he is MUCH happier now with the new, more sophisticated and stylish curtains on nice curtain rods and not just cheap tension rods)  But....with a second baby on the way and purchases that will need to be made prior to his arrival and the goal of saving, saving, saving....a new couch anytime soon was virtually out of the question.
The beat up green couch
And then....fate smiled kindly and very generously on us and we decided that a new couch was on the list of priorities for the summer.  And we found one!!!!!
The new couch....start of a new era
Dave actually found it.  And it is perfect for us and for our house...or any future house.  The color...but especially the fabric...will hide any stains and most wear.  AND...it gives us more sleeping options for family or guests who visit us as it is a Queen Sleeper!!!!!  AND!!!!....the dimensions are so much better than our old one.  When we bought the old couch, it was the most streamlined, not overstuffed one we could find.  Neither of us like the HUGE overstuffed couch trend that is almost impossible to escape from (unless you go to IKEA...which we didn't).  But this one is perfect!

Old Couch length:  92 inches                     New Couch length: 84 inches
Old Couch width: 43 inches                       New couch width: 36 inches

It will make our living room (as soon as we get rid of the old couch...which is on the agenda for this week) seem soooo much bigger.  I am SO excited.

.....So excited that I actually just wrote an entire post about the old and new couch.  {shaking my head} Okay.  I'm done and will move back to things about the family and such but I just had to share.  :)  I was so proud of our first couch...the first big purchase of our marriage (besides the car that we bought our first year of marriage)...and am now excited for the new and improved couch!  So, forgive me for my excitement and this silly post.  :)  But I just had to mark the end of an era and say goodbye to our beloved "green couch".  :)

Where did you buy it from if not IKEA? I've been thinking of getting a real couch soonish, but I hate the overstuffed and giant ones, too.
