Today is Arizona's 100th Birthday! That's right! Arizona's Statehood Day is also Valentine's Day. My friends and I started celebrating Statehood Day in high school as Valentine's Day would come and we would not have a Valentine to share the day with....but all of these cute obnoxious girls through out school would be walking around with their roses and teddy bears and such. So, we decided to celebrate the grand state we lived in and made a big deal of Statehood Day.
My mother, God Bless Her, even played along one year. My freshman year of college, I happened to be down in the Valley the weekend of Valentine's Day....chaperoning with my best friend the high school kids from my church at YPC (Young People's Convention). Valentine's Day/ Statehood Day fell on a Sunday and not only did I not have a Valentine....but my ex-boyfriend and his new girlfriend were also at this convention and were not shy about celebrating Valentine's Day with flowers and presents and the such. Yuck! Enter my mom.... :) She delivered sugar cookies to the church and I found that half were heart shaped....and the other half were the state of Arizona. :) The envelope of my card from her said that it was from the Office of the Governor (Hull, at the time) and all of the Valentine's Day references on the card were crossed out and replaced with "Statehood Day". And it was signed by Jane Dee Hull...and my mom. :) I about died from delight! I have never nor will I ever forget that day!!!! :)
And while I now have ample reasons to celebrate Valentine's Day....I still hold Statehood Day close to my heart. So.....here is a little quiz I have drawn up in honor of Arizona's 100th Birthday. Even if you're not from AZ, feel free to take it....and I'll give you the answers if you do. :)
