Jeeves & Wooster
We have our friends, the Dorans, to thank for introducing us to the genius that is P.G. Wodehouse. Wodehouse wrote something like 90 novels during his lifetime and we are both convinced that he is one of the true masters of the English language! Dave and I LOVE his Jeeves series -- both the books and the A&E TV series that was done in the early 90's with Steven Fry and Hugh Laurie (of "House" fame). One of our favorite activities on a fall/winter evening is to put in a Jeeves DVD (I bought Dave the box set for his birthday last year), open a bottle of wine, and watch Jeeves next to a blazing fire. The world can go insane but with "Jeeves and wine", all is right with the Pedersens! :-)Cook's Illustrated & Cook's Country
Again, we have the Dorans to thank for introducing us to this marvel of a magazine. We subscribe to both and the amazing recipes that come from these publications have revolutionized our meals! From Green Chili Hamburgers to a Spinach/Goat Cheese/Potato Frittata to Cream Cheese Raspberry Brownies --- everything is mouth watering delicious!English Premier League
We were in Germany and Austria during the 2006 Soccer World Cup which Germany hosted. We had never cared for soccer but quickly caught the fever that the rest of the world has! We have been busy watching the Qualifying rounds for the 2010 World Cup being held in South Africa. And then this year we found the English Premier League! Think: Manchester United,
Liverpool, Chelsea..teams that even most Americans have heard of at one point or another. Our cable distributor includes the FOX Soccer Channel which plays Premier League games LIVE on Saturdays and Sundays. Soccer is a great game to watch when you don't have time to actually sit through a sporting event. We will have it on in the background and go about our chores and the announcers will become very excited or agitated if a goal has been attempted or made. So, you then stop what you're doing, race to the TV, watch the 8 replays they show (from every angle), and then go back to your work! It is the best of both worlds! And...if you happen to miss a match because you're out enjoying nature or reading or taking a nap :-), you can always catch the Review show on Sundays night which show all the highlights from all the matches played over the weekend. And Mr. Siwko - you should be especially pleased. Chelsea is leading the pack --- for the time being! :-)Of course, the Tour de France, the numerous Tennis Opens and....NASCAR...are still among our favorite things. But it hasn't been the best year for the #88 (Dale Jr.), the Tour is over until next July and we have a couple months before the next major Tennis Open or the Winter Olympics (another favorite!)...so we have to find something else to be excited about!
Netflix
I think the person who invented Netflix should be knighted....or something like that. Dave and I have been
members since 2006 (soon after we moved to VA) and it is yet another thing that has revolutionized our lives. In Idaho, we used to pop into the video store (one of the major national chains) and wander aimlessly for 30-40 minutes and finally head home -- empty handed. It was frustrating and a complete waste of time. And then there was the issue of when we did find something (on the off chance), we never seemed to get it back on time. I am notorious for my video store late fees. We moved to VA and were introduced to the "red envelope" and "renting a movie" has been blissful ever since. We currently have a grand total of 222 movies in our Netflix Queue! 222!!!! Good grief! And I have to admit that probably 80% of those were made prior to 1960 or are some BBC or Masterpiece Theater mini-series! In other words -- movies that we never would have been able to find in the video store. And right now -- we've had Das Boot sitting on top of our TV for 3 weeks -- 3 weeks and no late fees!!!! It is 3 hours long and we just haven't had that much time to sit down for a movie lately (English Premier League is on people!) We LOVE the red envelope!!!Mother's Bouquet
Even the picture is beautiful! Dave and I love to drink hot tea--especially right before we go to bed. And this Mother's Bouquet is the best "sleepy time" tea we have found so far! Okay -- it's not really a tea but more of a tincture. Details! Carytown Teas in Richmond has an amazing assortment of loose leaf tea and tincture mixtures and as soon as there is a nip in the air, we stock up! We steep the above mixture for 20 minutes, drink up, and I personally have a hard time keeping my eyes open to make sure my head hits the pillow! It normally takes me 20 minutes or so to successfully fall asleep. And the sleep is a deep, deep sleep where you wake up refreshed. It is a beautiful thing! And we Pedersens highly value our sleep!!! :-)So, they're not Raindrops on Roses or Whiskers on Kittens but....these are a few of our favorite things!
