Christmas Around Richmond

What a wonderful Christmas season! My family made the trek eastward to spend the holiday with us in Richmond (we all recommend traveling on Christmas Day -- it is the best!). We realized that out of the 6 1/2 years that Dave and I have been married, we have only missed spending 1 Christmas with my family -- we consider this to be quite the feat considering all the places we've lived!

The pets were overjoyed at having 6 new hands to pet them and pay attention to them. I grew up with a Golden Retriever who passed away the summer Dave and I got married. My parents have yet to get another dog (you can do it, Dad!!) so they get their "Golden Retriever fix" whenever they visit Rusty. With the pets going bizerk at new people in the house and Dave showing off his new N-Scale Train to my dad -- nobody got to bed very early their first night here. But doesn't that come with the territory when you visit family?!

Dave had to work a couple days during my family's visit so I showed the family around Richmond. Here are my dad, mom, and sister Julie in Maymont Park which is a favorite spot for Dave and I.

We postponed our "Christmas" celebration until Dec. 26th so that we could have the big Christmas Dinner and open presents with my family. The wedding china, crystal, and silver all came out for the traditional feast of ham, cheesy potatoes, cider salad, etc. Yum, yum!

After dinner, we retired to the living room where Dave built a glorious fire and we opened presents. The pets were exhausted from a day of non-stop attention so they weren't even interested in the discarded wrapping paper, bows, or ribbon that littered the floor. My parents will tell anyone that they are not "cat people" and then, in the same breath, will give the exception of our cats! :-) Here, Socks works his magic and charms my mom and dad. So much for not being cat people! Everyone here looks rather content! :-)

As everyone started to retire for the evening, someone mentioned that the guest bathroom sink was not draining properly. Dave located the plunger and set about fixing the slow sink. However -- he made more of a mess and by the time he gave up, the sink would not drain at all. Step in - my dad! He assured Dave that they could fix the sink (so we wouldn't have to enlist the services of an expensive plumber) and that Home Depot would have everything they were looking for. Dave then asked a foolish question when you are dealing with my dad -- "When do you want to go to Home Depot?". And my dad's response -- "When do they open?!". So, Dave and my dad were perusing the aisles of Home Depot at 6:04 am the next morning as the women of the house continued to sleep in their nice, warm beds! As Dave and my dad left for their 2nd trip to Home Depot (because no plumbing job would be official without at least 2 trips to Home Depot), my mom, sister, and I decided to finally join the rest of the awakened world. Here are Dave Bob and Jeff Bob, fixing the clogged sink. All told, 3 trips were made to Home Depot and 50 years worth of sludge and build up (and other stuff) came out of the wall. Lovely! Dave and my dad have decided that if this "music thing" doesn't work for them, they'll go into business together.

I think there may be a future!!!!

Dave Bob and Jeff Bob worked up quite the appetite so as soon as the sink was functional (you should see it drain now!), we went into Carytown and had breakfast at Weezie's Kitchen - 1) because the food is fantastic and 2) in honor of my Aunt Weezie! I thought I had seen large portions before but the orders of Chicken Fried Steak that Dave and my dad received were enormous!

It must be tradition to have all the guys go to Home Depot together. When we were in E. Idaho, Heath, JC & my dad all went. Twice. Looks like you had fun visiting with your family!
